Dear elaine

Hello and welcome to my October newsletter

I know that time speeding up is supposed to be part of growing old, but really, what on earth has happened to this year?

One minute the days were getting longer and the trees were coming into leaf. The next it’s dark at 5pm and the shops are stocked with wretched Christmas cards. It’s not right.

So like it or not, here we are in October and I’ve actually managed to run to schedule with my newsletter. I thought I’d tackle contractions (it’s, I’ve, you’re, don’t, etc) in this issue. Some people really don’t like them because they think they are too informal. However, contractions make writing more engaging and easier to read.

I’m often asked if I write CVs. I don’t but I know a woman who does! Her name is Kate Walker and she is a career transition consultant. She works with people who have been made redundant, preparing them for their next role. Part of this work involves CV improvement and interview techniques.

Kate has written an article for this issue on what makes a great CV. I hope you find it useful.

Enjoy the autumn and see you again in December!

Contractions don’t have to be painful

Substituting a word or two with an apostrophe is perfectly acceptable. Far from making writing too informal, it makes it easier and more pleasant to read.

Contractions make copy sound more natural and less like it’s written by a robot or an alien from Dr Who.

Rudolf Flesch, creator of the Flesch Reading Ease test, was a big fan. Click here to find out why.

Does your CV get you noticed?

If you’re applying for a new job, you’ll need a CV. But just how do you make sure it stands out from the rest? What do potential employers look for and how do you make sure your CV gets you to the interview stage?

Career transition consultant and CV expert, Kate Walker, tells you how. Read more
